welcome
to the The Animation Theater of Poznań
Since 1945, when the original company of the Puppet Theater of Poznań was founded, the theater changed its name as its artistic quest evolved. For many years, when it was called the Theater “Marcinek,” its artistic practice was fashioned by its stage designer and director Leokadia Serafinowicz. Its present Managing Director Antoni Kończal assumed his office in 1980. When in 1989 Janusz Ryl-Krystianowski became the artistic director, the company took its present name of the Animation Theater, and since then it has grown into one of the most interesting puppet theaters in Poland with a unique aesthetic of its own.
The profile of the Animation Theater results principally from the work of its artistic director Janusz Ryl-Krystianowski as a stage director; he has already developed a personal, recognizable style of his productions. Most conclusive evidence of the high artistic standard of the Poznań company are the individual and collective prizes awarded at prestigious festivals and the certificates conferred by the Polish Center of the Association Internationale des Théâtres pour les Enfants et la Jeunesse (ASSITEJ). It is children and the youth who make up the essential audience of the Theater, and it is with them in mind that its repertoire of classic fairy tales and contemporary plays is selected. Interesting productions of valuable texts, put on by the artists working for and with the theater, evidence its serious approach to the audience as a partner. The theater exercises the imaginations of its young spectators, teaches them independent thinking and fashions their tastes, thus educating people who will be open to the contemporary world, will understand its pace and issues, and will fully participate in European culture.
In the year 2005, the Poznań theater celebrated the 60th anniversary of its activity. While realizing its established tradition and remembering the gallery of prominent figures associated with the theater, its artists also have the present in mind. The best demonstration of this attitude is the International Festival of Contemporary Plays for Children and the Youth “Kon-Teksty III”.
